Extended Day Program

Students referred to Metro Prep Grade School, Metro Prep High School and Laureate Day School generally experienced limited success in traditional special educational programs. As such, Metro Prep and Laureate Day School developed an Extended Day Program to effectively meet the increasing and complex needs of students who are either at risk for a more restrictive school, a residential placement or who have demonstrated the need for academic and therapeutic services outside the typical school day. The Extended Day Program provides a high quality, cost effective program in which students are engaged in academic, social and recreational activities in a safe, structured environment. In order to maintain a structured and supportive environment, the Extended Day Program operates on a 1:3 staff-to-student ratio. The Extended Day program supports healthy learning and social development after school, which is a crucial time of the day for many of our students.

Metro Prep and Laureate Day Schools serve students between the ages of 5 and 21 with Emotional Disorders, Specific Learning Disabilities, Other Health Impairments and/or Autism. Using a multidisciplinary approach, Metro Prep and Laureate Day Schools provide educational and therapeutic learning opportunities in a small, nurturing environment to help in the development of the whole child.

This allows our staff to collaborate with the referring school district to tailor each student’s Individualized Education Plan (IEP) to meet his or her specific academic, emotional, behavioral and related service needs. Therefore, a student may be enrolled in the Extended Day Program only when it is indicated on the IEP.

Our Extended Day Program team is composed of state-certified special education teachers, a recreational therapist, state-certified paraprofessionals and state-licensed counselors. We also provide a full 12-month schedule for students through our Extended School Year (ESY) component. We anticipate that all students will participate in ESY unless a student’s IEP indicates otherwise. Please refer to our Extended School Year policy for additional information.

Students enrolled in the Extended Day Program attend Metro Prep or Laureate Day School during the regular school day, Monday-Friday from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM, and then the Extended Day Program from 3:00 PM to 5:30 PM. Students enrolled in the Extended Day Program are grouped according to their grade levels.

The Extended Day Program is designed to engage students in challenging activities that promote the development of academic, social and personal skills. During this time, students have the opportunity to complete homework and to increase their level of understanding of difficult concepts and materials while working with a state-certified special education teacher. Students also have the opportunity to participate in group sessions to advance their personal goals as well as cooperation with others. These sessions are run by a state-licensed counselor. A recreational therapist is also part of the Extended Day Program team and involves the students in the planning and implementation of recreational activities that emphasize participation and collaboration rather than competition. A nutritional snack is also provided during the Extended Day Program to further promote healthy development.

If a student is enrolled in the Extended Day Program during ESY, he/she will attend the regular school day Monday – Friday from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM and the Extended Day Program from 12:00 PM to 4:30 PM. Lunch and a nutritional snack will be provided on these days.  On the days students spend more time in the Extended Day Program (12:00 PM to 4:30 PM), students will have the opportunity to participate in reading clubs, group counseling and recreational activities throughout the afternoon; this may also include life skill activities, such as planning and preparing their lunches. On Wednesday afternoons, the students will participate in a group session, recreational activities and also have a nutritional snack.

In order to provide our students with consistency and predictability, the same behavior management plan and policies utilized by the school staff during the regular school day are used in the Extended Day Program. Please refer to our Policy for Behavior Management & Crisis Intervention.

Please note, transportation to and from school for students participating in the Extended Day Program is required to be provided by the student’s public school district and/or the parents/guardians. At the end of the day, Metro Prep and Laureate Day School staff members walk students to their bus or cab.

The Extended Day Program does not operate during the following periods:

  • The 3 weeks that the school is closed during the calendar year: Spring Break, Summer Break I and Summer Break II
  • The 2 weeks during the winter holiday
  • On full days off during the regular school year, which are listed on the school calendar provided at the start of the school year
